Start with the tyres. Give them a quick visual check for obvious wear, cracks, or anything embedded in the tread, and make sure they look properly inflated rather than visibly soft. Tyres are one of the few things that directly affect how the bike handles the moment you pull out of the lot, so this is worth doing even if the bike has already been inspected before release.

Check the brakes before you're actually in traffic. Squeeze the front brake lever and press the rear brake pedal while stationary to make sure both feel firm and responsive, not soft or delayed. This takes seconds to do in the pickup area and is far better to catch there than to discover mid-ride.

Check the mirrors are properly adjusted and actually give you a usable view behind you, rather than just glancing at them and assuming they're fine.
